Part 1: Spring

This winter, we arrived to one of the region’s rare snowfalls, in which caretaker Mangiú had written a heartwarming “benvenuti” (welcome).  Within days, it all melted into sunshine for the arrival of famed Syrian writer Khaled Khalifa, at work on a novel, and Jo Catling, who is translating W. G. Sebald’s essays. For April and May, we were joined by novelist Nadifa Mohamed and poet Sean Borodale, below.
In April, we had a celebration of former Fellow Jennifer Clement‘s birthday with a visit from NYU Director Elena Toscano and Angela Davis, here with Nayla El Amin. (photos: Riccardo Cavallari)
And, of course, Andy (Andrew Sean Greer), our Director, has won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. This bounty has brought with it extraordinary opportunities, which unfortunately means Andy has to leave his position here for greater things.  And since it is Andy writing this, let me tell you how sad it is to leave such a magical and spirited place–like stepping out of a fairy tale, or, more concretely, like leaving home.  I will miss every part of it, and I can only encourage more writers to come, and more devotees to support the best place on earth in which to write.
Generous donations in 2017, both by former Fellows and friends of the Foundation, have allowed us to begin improvements on our famous road!  Soon, it will be much easier on postal delivery, on cars, and on visiting writers. Thank you to everyone who donated.
